Why is Arts Education Important?

Studies show that providing children with an arts curriculum during early childhood can have a profound positive impact on their future success. A 2011 National Endowment for the Arts report, The Arts and Human Development, noted several evidence-based studies that found, in comparison to control groups,
  • Three- to five-year-olds from low socioeconomic status families demonstrated significant gains in non-verbal IQ, numeracy, and spatial cognition after they had received music training and attention training in a small-class setting.
  • Children attending an arts integration preschool made greater developmental strides in multiple domains, including initiative, social relations, creative representation, music and movement, language, literacy, and logic and mathematics.
  • Students who attended an arts enrichment preschool showed higher levels of language development. They also improved in school-readiness skills, more so after two years than after one year of program attendance.

Arts education is crucial for students.
