36"X24", Framed Oil on Board A BIT OF A STRETCH: intimacy in the age of social media. We're somehow more connected than we've ever been, seeing vignettes of daily life that used to be reserved for our closest friends, family, lovers. Physically stuck in the grind of capitalism, we reach through virtual space to cling on any emotional bonds we can find. These relationships feel personal and vulnerable and yet, only allow for a phantom embrace that lets you recognize the form of what you're craving, but leaves you unable to fill it.- San Chen tethered together with Mandy Milligan
3, 10"x10" color pencil canvas prints. My work explores the intersection between interdisciplinary fields. The response work premise at the intersection of creativities is one that speaks to my pursuits and artist intentions. This painting investigates the transfer of knowledge and so speaks to the tethered red cord premise. This work suggests a wonderland. Responses in other art forms would be the completion of the transfer impulse creating a collaborative work in the exhibition.- Shari D. Felty tethered together with Davon Suttles
Framed work acrylic on canvas. 27.5 in x 29.5 in. "AND I WILL ALWAYS FIND MYSELF" (work in progress) will me a mixed media piece on a 16x20in canvas. I have attached a sketch of the piece. It will be comprised of a ribcage painted with acrylic paint on the canvas with red string sewn through the surface, as if it is tangled up in the cage. This work is meant to represent the red string bringing a person back to the self. It is as if to say "no matter how many times I lose myself, I will always come back."- Crawwlspace tethered together with Nik LaMaack

30" x 40", Oil on Canvas, wire attached to the back of canvas. My work is based on expressionist portraiture. To me, nothing is quite as intimate as trying to capture a person's inner psychology through artistic rendition. Understanding the "other" intimately is what connects us to each other, just as in the red string.- David Seligman tethered together with Hannah Huang

"Tired of Silence and Being Polite, Her Legs Turn to Shimmering Scales in the Night" is a sculpture with beads over a vase on a pedestal. Artist Statement: I am interested in the concept of perfection, especially since I grew up in a strict conservative community. Perfection was thrust upon me since birth, and that idea of being the perfect girl - woman - wife, consumed my entire existence until I was able to leave. Perfection is beauty on the surface, yet horror and turmoil underneath. I am particularly enamored by the ways that beauty and revulsion intersect. I want to create work that is technically perfect and beautifully pleasing. But once the viewer looks for a moment more - there is something else crawling under the surface. A nameless, faceless fear, lurking close behind that shell of elegance.
I seek to create a world that can inspire and disquiet; as well as dive deeper into the powerful presence of a woman untethered from other people’s ideologies.-Mel Ramaker tethered together with Olivia Lemmenes and Ada Cheng |
