5th annual Full Circle Danztheatre Festival
"Milestones"
“Milestones” are part of everyone’s life, and for five years now, the Full Circle Danztheatre Festival has been presenting the best in danztheatre. Our celebration of this anniversary is the inspiration for this year’s theme.
“Milestones” features 9 companies and artists, each bringing a unique take on this year's theme, including 7 world première works. Taking place March 13th and 14th at the Hamlin Park Studio Theatre (3035 N Hoyne, 773-486-8261 RSVP) at 7:30 p.m., the festival features both new and returning faces to Full Circle Danztheatre Festival.
Two new faces to the festival, Kate McIlvain and Shabam! Productions are contributing exciting twists. Kate McIlvain’s Three Men in Two Parts is a dance for the camera that studies three young men during the course of their night in a bar. Shabam! Productions’ West Side Story Redux celebrates the 50th anniversary of the musical by using the musical as a lens through which to view the themes of racism and division that are still resonant today.
The Core Project, Shahina, Christy Munch and Soul Theatre are returning to the festival with new works that will inspire, invoke memories, and make you laugh. Core Project will present Transient Views, a portion of a year long study of the changing roles of women. Shahina's Forty-two explores the many facets of self discovery and growth arising out of mid-life. Christy Munch’s Rubber Coated Chlorine is a tongue-in-cheek wink at "political speak," incorporating text spoken by Adlai Stevenson to the United Nations in 1962. Soul Theatre explores our relationship with death in Divino Juventud (Divine Youth), as a young man is lured into a labyrinth by Death, unconventionally portrayed by a woman.
Perceptual Motion, Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble and Wannapa P-Eubanks' new works are magical and warm-hearted. Perceptual Motion’s Garden of Stones creates a rich landscape reminiscent of Milhaud’s “The Reapers," with each performer marking her milestone moments with bits of text, gesture and stones. Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble’s Pilgrim Baptist Church-Rebuild/Renew is inspired by the congregation, and history of this Bronzeville church and the music of Mahalia Jackson. Wannapa Pimtong-Eubanks' White Balloon, performed in the traditional Butoh style, tells the story of a girl's awkward journey with a white balloon.
